I have titled this post, "conceptual blocks" because it seems to encapsulate what I observe on a daily basis. Please reflect and comment on that which I present in this Blog.
Many students do not appear to engage in the pursuit of intellectual excellence, many seem to be afraid to try. Some students have suggested that they are afraid to get answers wrong so they quit. I find it shocking to find out how many students do not believe that they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult. Surely students have an idea that this is not the right approach to take? Intuition and years of various institutional leaders (school, sports, government, etc.) have told us the equivalent of, "if you don't shoot you cannot score". Being passive, or rejecting mastery of a concept/skill is self-destructive, and must be avoided by ASU Prep students.
I am reminded of some quotes from Dune, a book by Frank Herbert. Please reflect on the following:
"It is by will alone I set my mind in motion..."
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
“Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken.”
